Turnips can be sown in the early spring and through late summer. Sow seeds 1/2 an inch deep, 1 inch apart, and in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches.
Thin plants to 4 to 6 inches apart. Plant every 2 weeks for continuous harvests in full sun or partial shade.
Purple Top White Globe Turnips are ready for harvest approximately 55 days after sowing.
To pick, loosen soil around turnips when they become 2 to 3 inches wide and pull roots from the soil. Twist off the tops and leave 1/2 an inch of the stem attached.
Humans have eaten turnips since prehistoric times. They were originally popular for feeding livestock.
