Heirloom Straight 8 Cucumber Planting Instructions
- Straight 8 Cucumbers do best in full sun.
- In general, cucumbers do not transplant well. Direct sow the seeds 3 feet apart in groups of 4 to 6 per hill, covering the seeds with a 1/2 inch of soil. Space the hills 3 to 4 feet apart. When the plants are 1 to 2 inches tall, thin to 3 seedlings per hill.
- Cucumbers are a heat-loving plant and are vulnerable to even light frost. If the temperatures drop, cover the seedlings.
- As the plants establish, use mulch to control weeds and conserve moisture.
Heirloom Straight 8 Cucumber Harvesting Instructions
Generally, cucumbers meant for slicing are ready for harvest when 6 to 8 inches long. For pickling, harvest when the fruit is 3 to 5 inches long.
Cucumbers are at their most tender and best taste when they are harvested young, before the seeds are fully developed.
Cut the fruit from the vine, rather than pulling it off to avoid damaging the plant.
